42nd Culver Tennis Tournament 2009 Results

There were 58 participants in the 42nd annual Culver Tennis Tournament which was held last weekend, August 8th and 9th. Although rain delayed the start of the tournament, all events were played and a good time was had by all. On Saturday afternoon, six teams competed for the Women's Doubles Trophy. The final match was won by Jenifer Foxworthy and Pat Angelicchio against Lara Swennumsen and Krista Furry.

There were fourteen teams for men's doubles. Four teams competed in the newly created over 55 age group which was won by Max Hungerford and Chuck Pocock. Ten teams of 5 each played a round robin for the Advanced Men's Doubles trophy. After some long hard sets, two teams emerged as finalists, and Alan Loehr and Peter Locke prevailed over Brad Clousing and John Sherck. On Sunday morning sixteen teams of Mixed Doubles players came out to play. Despite the heat, everyone played their best and had fun. Mixed Doubles Advanced was won by Peter Locke and Sarah Lamping over Jenifer Foxworthy and Stewart Roberts. In our newly created Mixed Doubles Over 55 group Nancy Closson and Jon Mulford won. Two teams met for the finals in Mixed Doubles Intermediate and the mother son team of Laura and Gabe Vervynckt won over the grandfather granddaughter team of Eldon and Chelsea Gohn.

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, Noah Gedrimas and Bill McLane braved the heat for the Men's Singles Advanced championship and Noah once again won the Tommy Hendricks trophy. Because Women's Singles was canceled due to rain on Saturday, there were only two contestants who played in Sunday afternoon's heat and Laura Gedrimas won the Women's Singles Intermediate trophy over Melissa Cannizzaro. Participants and spectators alike enjoyed the blueberries and cream dished out by Dorothy Peterson and Karen Mulford. Many participants and friends of tennis also enjoyed the awards party on Sunday.

2009 Awards

Best dressed was won by Jenifer Foxworthy with Bill McLane a close second.

The oil can award went to Jim Peterson for his valiant play as he tried to keep up with his partner, Pat Angelicchio and his other young opponents.

The best sport award went to Phyllis Pyke who would have liked to play more matches, but didn't complain when fate and the tennis tournament went against her.

Most improved player went to 14 year old Gabe Vervynckt.

The host and hostess statues were presented in appreciation to this year's hosts, Susan and John Nash.
