44th Culver Tennis Tournament 2011 Results

2011 Culver Tennis TournamentThere were 50 participants in the 44th annual Culver Invitational Tennis Tournament which was held August 6th and 7th. We had great weather, albeit hot, and although rain caused the Mixed Doubles Championship to be moved indoors, all events were played and a good time was had by all.

Six teams competed in Women's Doubles. Women's Doubles Advanced was won by Pat Angelicchio and Jenifer Foxworthy, and Women's Doubles Intermediate was won by Phyllis Pyke and Charlotte Smith. In Men's Singles Advanced, first-time CITT player Adam Meeker prevailed over a strong field of competitors that included the two previous years' champions. In spite of his many strategic wardrobe changes, Bill McLane (last year's champion) could not pull off a repeat. Men's Singles Intermediate, was won by first-time CITT player, Ryan Cox. Both Adam and Ryan have sworn to return next year to defend their titles!

On Saturday afternoon, there were eleven teams for Men's Doubles. Men's Doubles Advanced was won by John Sherck and Steve Walton. Seven teams competed in the Men's Doubles (Over 55) group, which had many long hard sets. Two teams emerged as finalists, and Leon Huskey and Doug Muzzillo prevailed over Stu Roberts and Bob Tanguy. No doubt Huskey and Muzzillo were motivated by the desire to possess the illustrious and coveted Harvey Fararri, Broken Racquet Trophy.

Women's Singles was played Saturday afternoon, or should I say, started Saturday afternoon. The six women who played Women's Singles were fierce competitors. The matches were long and hard fought, and in the end, could not be completed Saturday afternoon. Play resumed again on Sunday afternoon, and Julie Thompson prevailed as the Women's Singles Champion.

On Sunday morning thirteen teams of Mixed Doubles players came out to play. Despite the heat, everyone played their best and had fun. After a rain delay and change of venue, Mixed Doubles was won by Pat Angelicchio and Adam Meeker over Jenifer Foxworthy and Stewart Roberts. In the Mixed Doubles (Over 55) group, Jon Mulford and Phyllis Pyke won. It should be noted that Jon Mulford repeated this year. Jon's partner last year was Nancy Closson.

Participants and spectators alike enjoyed the blueberries and cream dished out by Dorothy Peterson and Karen Mulford. Many participants and friends of tennis also enjoyed the awards party on Sunday.
